Architectural Glass and Facades

For Facade Glass Large Format Processing

Facade glazing is large, heavy, and costly to rectify. Curtain walls, surface and point-holding systems used at height, require a preparation line capable of handling large-sized glass and performing millimeter-precise positioning. Deka's vertical machines operate at precisely this scale.

There is no margin of error in large-sized glass.

In architectural glass production, a single panel can exceed 3 meters in length and weigh hundreds of kilograms. Lifting and laying such a panel on a horizontal workbench requires significant floor space and carries a risk of breakage with each handling. Vertical processing eliminates these steps entirely: the glass maintains its vertical position from the cutting line as it passes through washing, grinding, drilling, and CNC stations. In point-holding (spider) systems, the hole position tolerance is less than a millimeter. — Failing to align the hole during installation is a mistake that renders the glass completely unusable.

Large capacity
Working at the required height for facade panels; processing the glass in a single flow without tilting or lifting.
Precise hole positioning
CNC positioning that achieves assembly tolerances in point-holding and spider systems; including countersink and internal surface quality.
Low handling, low waste.
Each raising and lowering carries a risk of breakage. Once the glass is hung on the vertical track, it remains in the same position until the end of the track.

Frequently Asked Questions about Architectural Glass and Facades

What should the hole precision be for a spider (point-holding) facade?
In point-holding systems, the hole centers must remain within the adjustment range of the mounting brackets; in practice, this means a positional tolerance of less than a millimeter. Manually marked drilling cannot provide this precision repeatably — CNC positioning is essential. Furthermore, the inner surface of the hole and the countersink must be smoothly machined, as stress is concentrated at this point during tempering.
What edge treatment is required for facade glass?
If the glass remains within a frame, a smooth bevel is sufficient. However, if the edge will be visible—glass railings, glass canopies, open-edged display cases—polishing is necessary. In both cases, edge preparation before tempering cannot be skipped as it directly affects furnace waste.
How big can the glass be?
Deka vertical washing machines are designed to work on a facade scale; the VGWM vertical washing machine can process glass up to 3300 mm in height. If you share the typical and maximum panel dimensions of your projects, we can determine the appropriate machine size together.
How is the delivery time planned for facade projects?
Facade work comes in batches and with a tight assembly schedule; line bottlenecks directly affect the site schedule. If you share the number of panels, hole density, and delivery window per project, we can calculate the required number of stations.

Technical and line integration

Is it safe to transport a large glass panel vertically?
Vertical handling is safer than horizontal handling for large-sized glass. In the horizontal position, the glass will deflect in the middle under its own weight, and this stress can lead to breakage; in the vertical position, the weight is distributed along the bottom edge. Additionally, the operator does not have to lift the glass.
Can Low-E and reflective coated facade glass be processed?
Yes. In coated glass, brush stiffness, water quality, and cleanliness of the conveying surfaces become critical; the orientation of the coated surface is defined from the outset in the production line. If you share the types of coatings you use, we can recommend brush and water configurations accordingly.
How much floor space do the machines require?
This difference is most dramatic at the facade scale. A machine that processes a 3-meter-long pane of glass horizontally requires a workbench at least 3 meters wide; a vertical machine operates at a depth of about one meter and grows upwards. A much smaller workshop would suffice for the same job.
CNC machining center or separate machines?
If the hole density is low and the work is repetitive, separate drilling and grinding machines are faster and more economical. If each panel requires different hole patterns, sections, or pocket machining, a vertical CNC machining center like FSR can do it all in a single setup. If you share your project profile, we can evaluate together which one is more suitable.
