Laminated and Safety Glass

For Laminated Glass Production Washing and Breaking In

In laminated glass, two glass sheets are bonded together with a PVB or EVA interlayer. The lifespan of this bond depends on how clean the surfaces are before autoclaving and how smoothly the edges are prepared. Deka's vertical washing and grinding machines guarantee these two conditions at the entrance of your laminating line.

Delamination is a washing problem.

The most common defect seen in laminated glass in the field. delamination — Separation of the interlayer from the glass is characterized by cloudiness and bubbling progressing inwards from the edges. Almost all of this is due to surface preparation before bonding: residual oil film, operating dust, or post-drying mineral residue prevents the PVB from adhering properly to the glass. The intermediate layer traps the contamination and cannot be cleaned again. Edge preparation is also important: a jagged edge will both stress the interlayer in the autoclave and leave a path for moisture to enter.

Autoclave pre-cleaning
A dry surface, free of oil, dust, and mineral traces, is essential for the interlayer to adhere perfectly to the glass; this is the most direct measure to prevent delamination.
Two plates, same quality.
In the laminating unit, the edges of both panes of glass must be aligned and of the same quality; automatic beveling makes this match repeatable.
Moisture ingress from the edge.
Burrs and uneven edges create a pathway for moisture to infiltrate the interlayer. Proper grinding directly extends the unit's lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laminated and Safety Glass

What is the most common cause of delamination?
Insufficient surface cleaning before assembly. Oil film, operating dust, or mineral residue from hard water remaining on the surface prevents the PVB from adhering properly to the glass. The interlayer traps this contamination, leaving no opportunity for cleaning after the unit is assembled — the defect becomes apparent after it leaves the autoclave.
What water quality is required for laminated glass?
The final rinse water should have low conductivity. Hard water leaves a barely visible mineral film on the glass after drying; this film weakens PVB adhesion. In laminate production, a closed-loop washing system fed by reverse osmosis or deionization is standard practice.
Can laminated glass be processed afterwards?
In practice, no. Drilling and edge processing after the laminated unit is assembled will damage the interlayer and compromise the integrity of the unit. Furthermore, if the glass is tempered laminated, it cannot be processed at all. All drilling and edge processing must be completed on both sheets before assembly.
The edges of the two plates don't match, what should I do?
In the laminating unit, the dimensions and edge profiles of the two panes of glass must be very close to each other; otherwise, the edge alignment will be misaligned and the appearance after trimming will be spoiled. Since automatic grinding processes both panels with the same parameters, it provides this match much more consistently than manual grinding.

Technical and line integration

What happens if the drying isn't sufficient?
Moisture remaining on the surface forms bubbles between the interlayer and the glass in the autoclave. Therefore, the drying section of the washing machine in lamination lines is more critical than in insulated glass lines; the air flow and blade positioning are adjusted to ensure that the glass comes out completely dry.
How much time can pass between washing and combining?
It should be as short as possible. Washed glass collects ambient dust as it sits; therefore, the washing machine is usually connected directly to the cleanroom entrance and the glass is connected to the assembly line as soon as it comes out of washing. This distance should be planned in advance in the line layout.
How often should toothbrushes be cleaned?
In lamination production, the brushes themselves can become a source of contamination. Glass dust and grinding sludge accumulating on the brushes must be cleaned regularly, and worn brushes should be replaced promptly. We provide a maintenance plan with shift, weekly, and monthly steps upon delivery.
Can the machines be integrated into my existing lamination line?
Yes. Integration at the conveyor and signal levels is possible. If you share your current line's glass measurement range, cycle time, cleanroom layout, and control infrastructure, we can determine the appropriate configuration together.
