Glass Tempering Plants

Before Tempering Edge Preparation

In tempered glass, most fractures are determined before entering the furnace, not in the furnace itself. Micro-cracks left at the edge after cutting grow under thermal stress and crack the glass. Deka's vertical grinding, drilling, and washing machines standardize edge quality at the entrance of your tempering line.

Your fire resistance rate decreases during the break-in period, not in the oven.

Every piece of glass emerging from the tempering furnace carries compressive stress on its surface and tensile stress within. If there are microscopic cracks at the edge, these stresses accumulate there, and the glass shatters either in the furnace or during cooling. The raw, cut edge carries dozens of such cracks; a smooth grinding process removes this layer, significantly increasing edge strength. This is the most direct way to reduce waste in tempering plants. Furthermore, tempered glass cannot be drilled or machined afterwards — all holes, countersinks, and edge finishing must be completed before it leaves the furnace.

Microcrack control
Removing edge cracks from the cutting process by grinding; reducing crack growth under thermal stress and furnace waste.
Last chance before baking
Tempered glass cannot be drilled, cut, or beveled. All drilling, countersinking, and edge finishing must be completed before it enters the furnace.
Repeatable quality
In hand grinding, edge quality varies depending on the operator. Automatic vertical grinding produces the same edge on every glass — waste becomes predictable.

Frequently asked questions about tempering plants.

What type of grinding process is required for glass to be tempered?
At a minimum, seaming is recommended; mere tape seaming leaves a portion of the micro-crack layer at the edge. Polishing is preferred if the edge will remain visible or if the glass will be exposed to high thermal loads. The critical point is the complete removal of the crack layer resulting from the cutting.
Can I drill a hole in the tempered glass later?
No. Tempering creates compressive stress on the glass surface; the moment this balance is disrupted, the glass shatters completely. All mechanical processes, including drilling, cutting, grinding, and countersinking, must be completed before entering the furnace. Therefore, the drilling machine is an indispensable part of the line in tempering plants.
Why is the distance between the holes and the edge important?
The edge of the hole, just like the edge of the glass, is a stress concentration point. If the distance of the hole from the edge and corner of the glass falls below the minimum values determined according to the glass thickness, the risk of breakage during tempering increases rapidly. Smooth machining and countersinking of the inner surface of the hole reduces this risk.
Is pre-baking washing necessary?
Absolutely. Dust, grinding slurry, or fingerprints remaining on the surface will permanently adhere to the glass in the furnace and cannot be removed from tempered glass. Furthermore, a dirty surface can locally alter heat conduction, leading to optical distortion.

Technical and line integration

Will the break-in speed meet my furnace capacity?
The grinding speed varies depending on the glass thickness, the desired edge quality, and the number of stone groups. If you share your kiln cycle time and typical glass dimensions, we can calculate whether grinding will create a bottleneck and, if necessary, recommend a configuration with a higher spindle speed.
How long does it take to switch between different thicknesses?
In vertical machines, thickness adjustment is done via the control panel, eliminating the need for mechanical mold changes. For tempering plants working with mixed thicknesses, this significantly reduces shift-in-shift transition losses.
How are break-in water and glass dust managed?
The glass grinding process operates with a closed-loop water system; glass dust is separated in a sedimentation or filtration unit, and the water is then recirculated. This reduces water consumption and prevents the spread of glass dust in the workshop.
Can the machines be connected to my existing bakery line?
Yes. Integration is possible at both the conveyor and signal levels. If you share your existing line layout, conveyor height and angle, and control infrastructure, we can determine the most suitable integration solution together.
